Survey into city bids doesn't favour Goole

Goole's bid to become a city has not found too much favour with those questioned as part of a survey.

A survey conducted by the research organisation YouGov, found 10 per cent of those questioned thought Goole was among the 'least deserving' to become a city.

The most popular of towns hoping for city status – classed by YouGove as 'most deserving' - were Bournemouth and Reading. The least popular was Tower Hamlets and Croydon.

Close behind Bournemouth and Reading, were Gateshead and Bolton as well as nearby Doncaster, Chelmsford and Dorchester.

Diamond Jubilee

The Government announced that as part of the Diamond Jubilee celebrations, a total of 26 towns would compete for the right to become a city.

The most recent new city statuses to be granted were to Preston, Newport and Stirling, which happened in 2002 as part of the Queen's Golden Jubilee celebrations.

Goole Town Council has not commented on the findings of the survey, but when the bid was submitted last year former mayor Councillor Malcolm Boatman, told Goole People the town had lots of attributes which would make it a great city.

At the time he said: "We already fulfill a lot of the criteria - for instance we have room for expansion, amazing architecture and a wonderful community spirit."

Other towns

As well as Goole, the towns competing for city status are: Bolton, Bournemouth, Chelmsford, Colchester, Coleraine, Corby, Craigavon, Croydon, Doncaster, Dorchester, Dudley, Dumfries, Gateshead,, Luton, Medway, Middlesbrough, Milton Keynes, Perth, Reading,  Southend, St Asaph, St Austell, Stockport, Tower Hamlets and Wrexham.

In total, 1,659 people were questioned online about the city status bids earlier this month.
